Why does Mike Hamilton still have a job?

About five months ago, I had the pleasure of having the president of the NPHC at CBU on the campus radio show that I co-host.

And while the president of the organization said all the things that the listeners wanted to hear, it didn’t hide the fact that beneath the facade that they were trying to project on the radio, they essentially said that it was their chapter and everyone else.

In their eyes, they believed that it was their sorority and that only people from that sorority deserved to be on the executive board.

While they constantly said it wasn’t true, despite trying to prove to the campus community that it was no schism amongst the various organizations that fell under the NPHC umbrella, their actions were different from how they projected it on the radio.

“We’re doing a good job,” they said.

Yeah, promoting everything that has everything to do with their organization and not anyone else.

The same thing could be said about Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton, who as I write this, still has a job in Knoxville.

This coming after seeing argubably the best Tennessee’s men’s hoops coach in my lifetime, Bruce Pearl, get caught for lying to the NCAA about unauthorized phone calls to recruits.

On the same weekend that Melrose star Adonis Thomas made an anticipated visit to Knoxville.

It used to be whenever Mike Hamilton’s name was brought up, Bruce Pearl’s name would always come up somewhere in the conversation.

Because Hamilton made the hire that in turn, saved Tennessee’s men’s basketball.

That was something that he could always hang his hat on.

Even after hiring Lane Kiffin, who left after one year in Knoxville, Hamilton still had Bruce Pearl to save his hide.

This is how an interview with Mike Hamilton would probably sound like:

Reporter: What about the player arrests?

Mike Hamilton: I hired Bruce Pearl.

Reporter: The baseball team is under investigation for NCAA violations.

Mike Hamilton: I hired Bruce Pearl.

That used to be the benchmark of the Hamilton regime in Knoxville, along with the renovations to Neyland Stadium.

But now it’s different.

Beneath the glitter and glamour of Knoxville, Tennessee athletics is in shambles.

And with the train wreck that is Tennessee athletics now, it’s time to give to hook to Hamilton.

There’s no need for an athletic director to have this kind of instutional control, or lack of, at a school where integrity is supposed to matter.

Wait, was supposed to matter.

And much like the clueless person that was on my radio show five months ago from that on-campus organization, UT athletics needs better leadership.

To echo a line from a school play I was in not too long ago, there’s no time like the present.

And this present time means change.

  1. With all of the trouble that universities are having with illegal conversations with recruits, I think the best way to monitor that is to have call recording installed so that every conversation is recorded from the coaching staff and university!

  2. We don’t know either. One would figure the man who calls the shots over the athletic department has a son running for governor. You would think he would want this mess cleaned up also. But wait he is a snake oil salesman too! Priced gouged people at his fuel pumps when gas was $4.00 per gal. So birds of a feather flock together. By the way Pearl is going around the state campaigning for “big Jim Haslem’s son who is running for governor.

As for Hamilton he is a snake. Always has been and always will be. Has never know how to tell the truth. Sooner or later perople will get fed up and stop buying tickets. Then something will happen. but until then it will be the same old same old.

  3. That’s why I brought up the point about the girl who was over the NPHC at my school. For all the great things she claim is going on campus, there’s still disunity. Hamilton can’t save his own ass anymore.
