Mick Boogie has another banger

One of my favorite rap groups of all time is De La Soul and in honor of their 20th anniversary together, Mick Boogie has a mixtape with remixes of some of their biggest hits.

Here’s the download link:

What a way to end a career

From the day that Allen Iverson arrived in this city, with a smile and a Beale Street blue guitar, the city was awash in the euphoria of having one of the greatest point guards suiting up for their team, four months removed from leaving a terrible situation in Detroit where Michael Curry just didn’t know what role to use him in.

That’s right, I finally realized that after all the Iverson-bashing I did to my friends, the guy was telling the truth after all about what was going on in Detroit.

But it didn’t change the fact that all of sudden once Iverson came here, it was going transform the Grizz into playoff contenders.

He was sent here to do one thing, and that was to put bottoms in seats, something that the Grizzlies haven’t done much of in the last few years because of the poor performance on the court and well, you get the idea.

The only home-court action that Iverson saw in Memphis was the open practice I went to in October on the day before my birthday, when Iverson, clad in warmups and wearing flip-flops, made shots from behind the backboard to an appreciative crowd.

A crowd that was hoping to see him jack up 3 pointers and cross people over, things that he did throughout the gist of his career.

But not in flip-flops, but in sneakers.

It wasn’t meant to be.

While I wasn’t a fan of him coming to Memphis in the first place and until recently upset at how he destroyed the run in Detroit, until the realization came to me in comments by Rip Hamilton and Iverson himself, I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of sadness for a guy that deserves a better ending than the one that could be unfolding before our very eyes.

When the book is closed on Iverson’s career, four scoring championships, and the fifth-highest scoring average for a career is what people want to remember as well as his “Practice” rant while he was with the Sixers.

Everything that happened with the Pistons and the Grizzlies would be nothing more than a blip on the radar.

Iverson to retire?

Iverson set to retire, according to ESPN.com. Check back with the blog later tonight to read my thoughts on his career and brief time in Memphis.

It’s getting close to completion

Light towers went up yesterday at the soccer field. By Christmas it should be done.

For some, transition means going from an average situation to a better situation.

Sort of like what I had going from Crichton College, a school on the verge of shutting down to Christian Brothers University, located just a stone’s throw away from where I grew up this year.

Not the other way around.

Courtney Lee, one of my favorite Hilltoppers of all time, has gone from playing in the NBA Finals in his rookie season to playing for the only team in the NBA without a win.

Right now after the loss to the Nuggets last night in Denver, the Nets are at 14 straight losses to begin the season.

And you thought the Grizzlies were having problems.

Try being Courtney Lee for one day.

Playin knockout

7. Drop The Bomb On ‘Em

Hug a what day?

Thanks again to Felicia Lee for dropping by to talk about Leadership Memphis on today’s show. Only problem was the fact that the episode wasn’t saved to the archives, so you guys have to use your imagination on what we discussed during the hour today.

As you know, there’s no show tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean you can miss out on the fun from STGS. Thanks to the wonders of technology, you can check Facebook during the two-day break I get from letting you guys hear my down-home Southern drawl that I finally got after years and years of watching “King of the Hill”.

The guy who invented the word be-NOUN-tress, Sean Williamson, a former roommate of mine and proud brother of the Phi Beta Sigma chapter at CBU, will be 22 on Thanksgiving so in honor of Mr. Williamson, tomorrow on the campus is “Hug a Snow-NOUN/Be-NOUN-tress Day”.

If you’re wondering what those words mean, it’s quite simple.

Be-NOUN-tress was our way in the final months at Crichton of describing beautiful girls, a word that Williamson said to Fourth Estate host Randy Butcher during the PBS vs. TKE game in October, was just a word that he just came up with.

However, once I arrived on the campus of Christian Brothers University, I figured that there was a huge flock of beautiful snow bunnies, I figured the same that we did with the word “be-NOUN-tress”, by taking the word beautiful, shortening it and then putting noun and then the suffix “-tress” at the end.

Hence the word “snow-NOUN-tress”, a word that I tried to get into the Urban Dictionary back in September, which means a beautiful white girl, however in most cases, I’ve said be-NOUN-tress more than snow-NOUN-tress around campus and on my show.

And since the show began airing in September, there’s been a lion’s share of be-NOUN-tresses coming by to talk with me and Matt.

So here’s my advice to you guys and gals on the campus of CBU.

In honor of my boy Big Sean’s 22nd birthday, tomorrow as we head home for Thanksgiving break and finish whatever assignments that need to be done, hug or say hi to a pretty girl around these parts.

And when I say pretty, not just the outside.

But the inside as well.

Anyway, have to run.

This morning, I threw out a question on my Facebook status about the future of Charlie Weis, who has been the subject of scorn from a segement of Notre Dame fans.

Actually, a huge segement if you read the message boards and the comments left on some of the articles written on the South Bend Tribune’s website.

If the Irish did fire Charlie Weis today, the buyout would be like none other in college football.

According to various reports, the buyout for Weis would cost the university $18 million while the staff’s buyout would be $2 million.

If you’re good at math, that equals to $20 million total.

About 20 minutes ago, I got a reply to that question from Syd Warner, who is in Carrollton, Georgia with the CBU basketball team as they face West Georgia tonight before the Thanksgiving holidays.

“He would be owed too much money,” he wrote, “Also they hired Weis to be an offensive mastermind and he has done just that.”

Very true, but you can’t go through a season in college football winning 33-30 offensive shootouts. You just can’t.

Notre Dame, like it or not, has turned into what Purdue football was in the final years of the Joe Tiller era, good starts to the season, but in the end doomed because of no defense.

Purdue had quarterbacks like Kyle Orton and Curtis Painter as anchors of  their offense, only to see them crumble in games against teams with strong defensive units in the second half of the season.

And in the end, for all that the offense did under Joe Tiller, the Boilermakers only won one Big Ten championship.

The spread offense, something that Charlie Weis has failed to realize since being coach at Notre Dame, mostly works if you have a strong defensive unit.

Period.

You can’t always play in shootouts and expect a miracle everytime, Mr. Weis.

You just can’t.

If I was you, I’d hire a better defensive coordinator as a way to save my ass and not have the university as well as the city of South Bend shake couches to come up with your buyout.

Until then, enjoy going to another B-list bowl.
